Happy & Blessed Samhain!

Image
Samhain is the Celtic fire festival from which Halloween derives. Marking the passing of summer into winter, a time of death and then rebirth, it is traditionally a time of reflection, honoring the dead, and looking ahead to the coming year, both in terms of personal change and goals, and in terms of the Earth’s future. At Samhain, ghosts and spirits pass over into the physical world. But while traditions such as fires and carved pumpkins are designed to keep away the evil spirits, other souls of the dead are welcomed and honored. The Celts believed that the veil between worlds was thin at this time, particularly in the midnight hour between Samhain Eve and Samhain. As spirits of the Otherworld pass into that of the living, so began the perfect time to connect with the souls of deceased loved ones and ancestors of long ago. Today, those celebrating Samhain will honor the ancestors through ritual, meditation, spells, altars and shrines. It is a wonderful way of remembering love

Diwali

Image
I just learned about the Indian festival ,Diwali. The doctor I work for is from India and we had the day off today, so he could spend the day with his family in observation of this holiday.I love learning about different cultures and their customs and religions.I asked the doctor to tell me about Diwali. Diwali falls on a new moon day in the month of October or November. The word 'Diwali' is the abbreviation of the Sanskrit word 'Deepavali', which means 'rows of lights'. Diwali is a festival of lights,it is the biggest festival of India that celebrates the victory of good over the evil. On this day people  clean their houses, wear colorful new clothes, aet delicious food and sweet treats, light candles and "Diyas" (small oil lamps)all around their house.Lakshmi-Puja is performed in the evenings when the tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits, devotional songs- in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and Naivedya of traditi

A Strong Woman...thoughts about my mother

Image
I really like this. The words are so true. I believe there is a lot of strength in women ,a lot of resilience. I think back to what my mother had to endure. How she had to  do back breaking work for long hours to support her children. That took courage and faith.Lots of faith. I remember the hardships she went through, the endless struggles, dissapointments, worries. The lonliness and bitter tears she cried when we had to be in another country, away from her,so she could work and support us.I know of her disillusion with love.Love that mostly hurt.Twice she gave her heart, her love ,her soul only to be abandoned or cheated on and used. She told me it was worht it,just to have us.We were her joy.Her reason for going on!My but that woman had inner strength! She never  gave up,orrelied on anyone but herself to take care of us.I am deeply grateful to her.She is my mother. Her role was that of a mother and father to us,because those fathers were not around.Never did they wipe a tear, sit by hospita

International Day Of Non-Violence/ Gandhi's Birthday!

Image
I wanted to post this today because this is one of the people I hold great admiration for.He was a great spiritual leader, peacemaker and humanitarian. Octobert 2nd has been declared  International Day of  Non-Violence in honor of Mohandas K. Ghandi's Birthday. This was decided on June 15th 2007 by The United Nations General Assembly as an occasion to reaffirm the “universal relevance of the principle of nonviolence” and the commitment to “a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and nonviolence” advocated by Gandhi. Gandhi established the principle of non-violent resistance that was used by later revolutionaries like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in Americas Civil Rights struggle and Nelson Mandela in South Africa. ********************************************************************************************  A deeply spiritual man, Gandhi lived a life of simplicity. He lived his beliefs, which  included:  PEACE ,Compassion, faith, truth and non-violence . There is so muc
